The Case
Karen Greenberg assisted the parents of three adoptive children, with a history of
successful open adoption relationships with two of their children's birth
families, in handling problems with an agreement for contact with the third
birth family. In addition to several confrontations during visits and phone
calls, the birth family reported the parents to the local police and the
Department of Children and Families.
Karen presented evidence at trial
establishing the birth family's refusal to accept the adoption and the
adoptive parents' role as the child's parents, and their refusal to honor or
abide by the terms of the agreement for contact. Karen successfully
obtained a drastic curtailment of the birth family's contact and
communication with the child and an award of attorney's fees.
