Karen is an experienced and accomplished attorney, having concentrated in family law matters for more than twenty years. She regularly represents adoption agencies, adopters and birth parents in all aspects of adoption law. Karen also represents many individuals in disputed family law matters. She helps her clients make their way through difficult and heavily-contested matters, such as divorce, child-related issues of custody, visitation and support, property division, alimony, retirement benefits and paternity.
Family law disputes may involve restraining orders, domestic violence, divorce, alimony, custody, child support and paternity, adoption, termination of parental rights, visitation issues and guardianships. Being faced with a family law dispute is an unsettling experience. Even more troubling is the fact that many people embroiled in such disputes do not have the benefit of experienced legal advice. When confronting any of these critical proceedings, retaining the right Massachusetts family law practitioner can often be your most critical decision.
Family law is an area of the legal profession that is intensely personal. Clients confronting family law disputes need both personal and professional support through times that are highly emotional, but require calm and reasoned decision-making. Karen has the ability and experience to handle all of your family law needs, from the detailed management of a complex marital property dispute to the sensitive advocacy needed in an emotionally charged child custody proceeding. Karen employs both litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods, such as mediation practice.
A frequent lecturer and author on adoption related issues, she recently collaborated in the redrafting of the Massachusetts adoption statutes. As a founding member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, she was elected to its Board of Directors in 2004 and became President of the Academy in May 2007. The Academy works to promote the reform of adoption laws and disseminates information on ethical adoption practices.
Karen is a graduate of Boston University and holds a master’s degree from Wheelock College. She graduated cum laude from Suffolk University Law School in 1983 and formed Konowitz & Greenberg, P.C. in 1988.

Arlene graduated cum laude from Colby College and received her law degree in 1991 from Boston College Law School. She began her legal career at the Department of Social Services in Boston, litigating contested child custody and termination of parental rights cases in the juvenile and probate courts, and has successfully argued before the single justice session of the Supreme Judicial Court.
Joining Konowitz and Greenberg, P.C. in 2001, Arlene brings her compassion and problem-solving skills to her practice in the areas of adoption, estate planning, probate and trust administration and corporate work. She currently oversees the firm’s uncontested adoptions, working closely with private adoption agencies and prospective adoptive parents. In addition, Arlene advises clients on a wide range of family and business matters. In her estate and trust practice, she prepares estate plans, consistent with her clients’ goals, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney and medical directives, and homesteads, and also helps her clients navigate the administration of trusts and estates. In the corporate area, she counsels small and large corporate clients on a variety of issues including corporate structure, buying and selling businesses, and negotiating leases.
Arlene is actively involved in community activities, her church and her children’s schools.
